Capacity Crowd Mangiano With Mangino.
Something you probably didn't know.  Mangiano is Italian for "they ate".  So our TJC capacity crowd mangiano with Mangino on August 25 at the Ramada Downtown.  Now, if there's any relationship between the coach's name and the verb--quien sabe?  Okay, that's Spanish--we're a multilingual newsletter! In any event, fun was had by all. Herschel Stroud, Ray Raythert, and  the band played fight songs, Beverly Bernardi twirled and pom-ponned, the inflatable Jayhawk was inflated, then deflated, and the crowd was elated...and after barbecue...completely sated. Coach was a little late--I told him there were suggestions I take a magic marker, paint on a fake mustache and stand in for him if he didn't show.  Athletic Director Bohl asked for audience members to stand who'd been football season ticket holders the longest.  Board member Bill Bradford won--he's been attending since at least 1897.  Okay, I'm lying--but he's been there about 25 years longer than my measly 35 years of what some have called eternal masochism.  I try to remember the good years, look for improvement (and we've all seen some this year), and hope that just once before I die I'll get to see KU beat Nebraska.  Linda Smith, whom I refer to as my football wife (34 years of football games together--she missed my first year--the 1968 Orange Bowl team--boy did she start at the wrong time!)--well, anyway, Linda and I have a decades-long agreement that when we beat Nebraska--hopefully at Memorial Stadium (ours, not the one in Lincoln)--she and I are going to help tear down the goal-posts.  Now, some of you young readers may have to wheel us out onto the field, mowing down those ushers in the attractive yellow windbreakers--but we're gonna pull one of those suckers down.  And then we're gonna wheel down the entire field and pull down the other one.  We will just watch from the sidelines as you young ones tote them over the hill and into Potter's Lake--at our age we like to avoid hills.  Then we'll go out and mangiamo (mangiamo is "we eat", mangiano is "they eat")some Italian food and toast the coach.

TJC Billboard #2
Planning is ongoing for the placement of the second TJC sponsored KU billboard.  All those purple people going from Topeka to Manhattan for home games have to see our first billboard on westbound I-70.  Now everyone going to and from casinos and other places north will be able to see our two-sided billboard on north US 75.  Watch your newsletter for an official arrival date.

Honors Banquet
The KU Alumni Association will once again honor Shawnee County high school seniors who have grades in the top ten percent of their classes.  This year's banquet is scheduled for November 12 at the Holidome. Dinner is at 6:30 pm and costs $12.75.  For further info, call TJC member Marcia Cassidy at  234-5098.

KU Basketball Parking
Beginning two hours prior to home games, the KU Athletic Corporation provides a $3 bus ride (roundtrip) from Lot 91 located at the lower tunnel entrance to the Kansas Union (North of Spencer Art Museum).  Return trips run for 30 minutes after the game. A wheelchair shuttle bus runs the same route and will unload and load near the South Fieldhouse entrance.

Help Roy Williams and the other Coaches vs. Cancer
The Coaches vs. Cancer fundraiser for the American Cancer Society lets you pledge a flat donation--or, what your editor does, gamble a little and pledge a certain amount--twenty cents--whatever--per three point shot made by the Jayhawks.  You can count three-point goals made by the men, women or both.  You can also make your contribution in the memory of someone or in honor of someone living.  For further info, Kim Brown, American Cancer Society, 1315 SW Arrowhead Rd, Topeka, KS 66604.

Six Game Men's Basketball Mini-Pack
For $130, you can have general admission tickets to the first six KU home basketball games.  Only 500 tickets are available.  Fax your request including credit card number to  785-864-7917 or mail to 1651 Naismith Dr, Room 108, Lawrence, KS 66045.

General Admission sections changed.  If you attend a KU men's basketball game on a general admission ticket, former GA sections above the band in the south section have been moved from general admission to assigned seating. Check with ushers.

Women's Basketball Courtsiders are planning bus trips to Ames, Jan. 11, and Columbia, March 1. For info, call Bette Luther, 785-864-4229.

BIG BLUE CARD RETURNS.  For $50 single and $75 family (2 adults, 2 kids), slightly more for reserved seats, you can obtain a BIG BLUE CARD which is season admission for volleyball, soccer, women's basketball, baseball and softball.  Call 1-800-34-HAWKS.

If you're as disappointed in the declining size of the KU marching band as this editor and many other longtime football fans, a new fundraising program is about to get underway to restore the stipends formerly offered to upper class band members and to also help fund other band activities, all intended to increase the band to its former size and glory.  More info coming soon.

TJC Tailgate Cancelled

Our annual tailgate party had to be cancelled this year because of exorbitant costs for tenting and catering required by KU.  Our president was able to get a free tent last year, and the ticket price covered our private catering.  That avenue is no longer available to TJC at a reasonable price.  Next year, we may look at returning to a less opulent, parking lot location where we can still put on the event at a reasonable ticket price.
