HAWKWATCHES BIGGER & BETTER THAN EVER
Throughout the season, TJC members have been gathering together at the non-smoking room of Jeremiah's Live to cheer on the Hawks.  Huge crowds have come together for the Orange Bowl and selected basketball games.  The K-State game was capacity, and the Missouri game overflowed the non-smoking room with many members taking over the smoking areas of the bar as well.  Kids are always welcome in the non-smoking room, and we've seen more this year than ever before, from teens to toddlers to babes-in-arms.  Depending on scheduling of games, Hawkwatches are planned for Big 12 and NCAA KU games.  Watch email for updates or call the TJC phone line at
TJC PHONE: 271-1224 or check the website at www.topekajayhawkclub.com . The Topeka Jayhawk Club would like to thank Jock’s Nitch Sporting Goods in Lawrence for giving us discounts on our door prizes handed out at Hawkwatches.

SHAWNEE COUNTY ALUMNI CHAPTER ORGANIZES
The KU alumni association has organized a Shawnee County chapter to assist and support KU in non-athletic areas.  The chapter will work closely with TJC, largely because most of the officers are longtime TJC members.  Upcoming alumni events planned are support for KU Day at the Capitol on March 10, the third annual Jayhawk Generations picnic for Fall '08 freshmen from Shawnee County and their families, a Topeka debate demonstration by the nationally top-ranked KU debate squad, especially inviting local high school debaters as well as the public, a lunch for law school alumni living and/or working in Topeka, support for local recruitment events and a wine-tasting party to recruit new members for the alumni association.
Chapter officers include Larry Tenopir, President; Spencer Duncan, Vice-President; Tracy Keegan, Secretary/Communications; Janice Waldo, Recruitment Chair; Mary Turkington, Legislative Chair; Tyler Johnson, Membership Chair; Steve & Beth Martino, Kansas Honors Program Co-Chairs; and Diana Zimmerman and Cleo Murphy, co-chairs of the Community Relations/Social Committee. TJC Liaison is Kathleen Hickert.   Other board members include Christie Applehanz, Dick Carter, Rebecca Crotty, Bob Dunwell, Nancy Kelley, Cleo Murphy, Bob Onek, Richard Pratt, Jane & Otto Schnellbacher, Lynne Christ. TJC members are invited to participate and/or consider joining the alumni association as well.  There are no separate dues for the local chapter--all you have to do is join the state association.  Alumni association dues are $50/year with an option for life membership.  Membership is open to everyone who supports KU whether or not you've graduated or even been a student.  For information on membership, contact Tyler Johnson at 271-2888.

ST. PATS PARADE CONTINGENT HOPING TO BE BIGGER THAN EVER
For ten-plus years, TJC has entered a contingent of people and vehicles in the local St Pat's Parade, several times winning awards for best non-commercial entry.  Last year saw a record 11 vehicles, including a 40-foot  motorhome (with our own bathroom--YAY!),  Beverly Bernardi and a bevy of red and blue twirlers/pom-ponners, Baby Jay, and a squad of walkers handing out thousands of red and blue beads.  Our alumni band and the Midwest Music bandwagon (courtesy of Cecil Baker) are always a hit! We're hoping to increase the number of decorated vehicles this year and give out 6,000 Jayhawk stickers as well as the beads.  The timing and likely location of NCAA tournament games will also probably allow the Alumni Association to include their famous trailer in this year's parade.  If you have a vehicle or otherwise want to participate, please call Larry Tenopir at 233-9467.  Vehicles will gather off-site in order to proceed en masse at 9:30 to the parade staging site.  The time spent in the parade line has been alleviated a great deal by the presence of our own bathroom facilities.  There are even discussions this year of putting together some sort of snack/lunch for our participants.  The parade always falls right in the middle of March Madness and is our way of showing massive Topeka support for the Hawks right when it especially counts.

WANTED: Newsletter Editor
Your newsletter editor has been falling down on the job lately, partly because after 13 years in this job, he desperately would like to find someone willing to take it over.  Anyone with a willingness to just gather some pertinent facts, serve on the TJC board, and occasionally put together a newsletter keeping members up-to-date, PLEASE call Larry Tenopir at 233-9467.

WELCOME WALKER ON MARCH 1

Your editor assumes all readers are aware that K-State's Bill Walker relieved himself in some towels during a basketball game on ESPN.  It was quite the talk of national sports commentators at the time.  Well, here's a little commentary in quasi-poetic form:

Wee Willy Walker, when waterlogged screamed,
"I can't leave the floor, abandon my team!
Gotta pee, gotta pee, gotta pee and how!
Gonna have to do it right here and now.

Anyone got a Huggy or Pamper?
Oh my no, all I'm getting is damper.
Tried crossing my legs really, really tight.
But then I couldn't elevate just right.

Hey trainer boy, trainer boy, give me your towel.
I know it's filthy, disgusting and foul.
Can't wait no longer, gotta answer the call.
Just give me the towel; here, you take the ball."

Then the sound of a whoosh, a groan and a whizzz,
The smile of relief once Bill'd done his biz
And from me, a grin, a laugh from deep inside
Cause someone had finally really p...ed on purple pride!
